Direct Marketing Association Announces New Chief Executive Officer

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA)has announced Lawrence M. Kimmel as its new chief executive officer (CEO).  Mr. Kimmel is the former Chairman and CEO of Grey Direct Global Network, a leading direct and digital agency, where he was responsible for up to 49 offices in 42 countries.  He will begin on Monday, August 2 and be based in DMA’s New York headquarters.

Before becoming chairman and CEO of Grey Direct in 2000, Mr. Kimmel served as the President of the agency’s flagship office.  Prior to Grey, Mr. Kimmel spent seven years in senior management at Draft Worldwide. Mr. Kimmel was the founder and President of Unimark, a direct marketing, promotion, and advertising agency that created hundreds of successful initiatives for small- and medium-sized businesses.  In the past year, Mr. Kimmel started a business with his wife, Dr. Tara Allmen, one of America’s leading experts in menopausal medicine.  The company’s products have been lauded by medical thought-leaders; in the blogosphere; by consumers; and have been featured on Good Morning America, Fox News, CBS News, and countless other media outlets. He is a graduate of American University in Washington, D. C.

Agency and Corporate Veteran Joins as Managing Director of the Firm’s Chicago Office

Porter Novelli has announced that Randolph Pitzer has joined the agency as managing director of its Chicago office.
With more than 25 years of experience, Pitzer boasts a strong background in public relations, communications, and marketing for both clients and agencies.  He joins Porter Novelli from Edelman, where he spent the past eight-and-a-half years as executive vice president and general manager in the Chicago office’s corporate practice, focusing on technology and business-to-business accounts.  While at Edelman he worked on clients including A.T. Kearney, Motorola, and Qwest Communications (both enterprise and consumer) among others.  His agency career also has included tenures at both Ketchum and Ogilvy PR.

On the corporate side, Pitzer has served in a variety of marketing and communications roles for such organizations as Mercantec, Inc., an e-commerce applications software developer; Spyglass, Inc., an Internet software provider; and SPSS, Inc., a business intelligence software supplier.

Pitzer earned a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia.  He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the Business Marketing Association (BMA).  He serves on the board of the Chicago BMA.

Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide (Ogilvy PR) announced today the addition of two senior staff members to its New York, N.Y. office.  Mary Coyle joins as Senior Vice President of Healthcare Media Relations and Larissa Severenko joins as Senior Vice President of the Healthcare Practice in New York.

Coyle brings more than 15 years experience in developing and executing public relations campaigns to increase media exposure and support strategic marketing initiatives for top healthcare accounts.  Prior to joining Ogilvy PR, Coyle served as Senior Vice President/Director with Euro RSCG Worldwide PR where she oversaw media strategy for a variety of clients in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.  Coyle earned her bachelor’s degree in business management/finance from Brooklyn College. In her new position at Ogilvy PR, she will be leading the vision and strategy for the agency’s healthcare media relations efforts.

Severenko has more than 10 years experience in developing and executing strategic communications and media relations programs in the healthcare arena.  Prior to joining Ogilvy PR, she served as Vice President of Global Health with MS&L Worldwide, where she worked on a variety of blue-chip clients including managing campaigns for Pfizer’s Depo-Provera and Procter & Gamble’s Prilosec OTC.  Severenko earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and literature and rhetoric from Binghamton University.  She earned her master’s degree in public relations from Boston University.  In her new role at Ogilvy PR, Severenko will play a lead role in managing Ogilvy PR’s female healthcare business.

McClenahan Bruer Communications (McBru), a full-service agency for deep-technology companies, announced a senior-level promotion and new hires that reinforce the depth and breadth of its integrated marketing services.  James McIntyre is leading the client services group as the new director.  He is joined by two new senior communications counsels, Joe Saylor and Greg Herzog, who individually and collectively fortify the agency’s services across the spectrum of marketing communications.

As director of client services, McIntyre will lead McBru’s client services organization.  His expansive agency experience covers technology sectors - server and storage hardware and software, electronics manufacturing, and medical devices - as well as consumer ones.  Prior to serving as senior communications counsel at McBru, McIntyre led public relations programs at Portland’s Lane PR, helping companies in the financial services, insurance, health care, and hospitality industries.  His management experience includes a stint as a vice president with integrated technology communications firm Brostoff Associates where McIntyre served category leaders such as Siemens, Teradyne, and Philips Royal Electronics.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and philosophy from San Diego State University.

Senior Communications Counsel Joe Saylor brings 15 years of journalism and technology PR and marketing agency experience to McBru.  After five years as a television news anchor and reporter, Saylor joined Waggener Edstrom Worldwide where he worked with business software provider SAP and Microsoft and contributed to the highly successful launch of Windows Server 2003.  He has also led PR efforts for a number of technology industry standards organizations including the USB Implementers Forum and Communications Platforms Trade Association.  Saylor holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.

Prior to joining McBru, Senior Communications Counsel Greg Herzog served as a producer at Creative Media Development (CMD) where he directed interactive programs for clients including Microsoft, Cisco, Autodesk, and SanDisk.  He brings additional b-to-b direct marketing experience from his tenure at Babcock & Jenkins where he worked with Microsoft, Sun, Ciena, and FileNet.  Herzog has also served as senior account manager at Coates Kokes, leading advertising and public relations programs for clients such as the Portland-area professional sports teams and sustainable construction companies BetterBricks and Metro Paint.  A native Idahoan, Greg earned his bachelor’s in marketing from Boise State University.

Porter Novelli has announced that Stephanie Koze has joined the agency as executive vice president and will manage its Shire Pharmaceutical Group business.

Koze offers more than 20 years’ experience overseeing U.S. and global communications and marketing campaigns for such companies as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Company, Pfizer, Roche, and sanofi-aventis.

Prior to joining Porter Novelli, Koze served as senior vice president, deputy practice director at MS&L New York.  There she developed and oversaw communications programs for a variety of leading pharmaceutical brands, including Cialis, Evista and Pegasys, and for targeted biopharmaceutical products, such as Folotyn, Forteo, and tesamorelin.  She also led nationally-recognized disease education programs in the oncology and vaccine arenas.  Previously, Koze was a senior vice president at Edelman and vice president at Chamberlain Healthcare Public Relations.

Cohn & Wolfe Adds Industry Veteran, MaryEllen O’Donohue, as Senior Strategist and Client Counselor

Cohn & Wolfe announced today that industry veteran MaryEllen O’Donohue has joined the firm as Executive Vice President, Strategy and Client Service.   In the role, O’Donohue will serve as a senior counselor and strategist for clients in New York, home to Cohn & Wolfe’s global headquarters, as well as other offices.  Her primary focus will be on healthcare clients, but she also will offer her expertise in the corporate, technology, and consumer sectors.
O’Donohue joins from MS&L Group where she worked for 24 years in a number of leadership positions.  As director of the agency’s North American Healthcare Practice for the past decade, she helped build and lead accounts in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, device, and diagnostic industries.  She also launched consumer education, direct-to-physician, and hospital-based campaigns across a wide range of therapeutic categories including diabetes, HIV, oncology, CNS, and pain.

During her career, O’Donohue has crafted and implemented strategic communications programs for some of the most respected brands in the world including: Bayer, Philips, Lilly, Roche, BD, Pfizer, NCR, AT&T, and Lexis/Nexis.  While at MS&L, O’Donohue founded the industry’s first healthcare media relations department, and established systems that proactively provided clients with significant media opportunities for their brands.  In addition to healthcare media, she has managed large-scale, high-profile media events such as the Papal Visit to New York.

Prior to leading the MS&L North America Healthcare Practice, O’Donohue spent eight years servicing technology accounts, driving brand uptake in the personal computer, software application and telemedicine arenas.  She combined her healthcare and technology background to help expand the market for medical technologies such as minimally-invasive coronary bypass surgical products, MRIs, CT, and blood testing equipment.

Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide (Ogilvy PR) has announced that Dirk Shaw has joined the agency as a senior vice president of its 360 Degree Digital Influence Practice. Shaw is an experienced digital marketing leader and will oversee the strategic planning and creative deployment of social media that drive the marketing and brand-building agenda.

Prior to joining Ogilvy PR, Shaw served as served as social media strategist for Vignette, designing and implementing social media and marketing strategies to enhance brand reputation, increase traffic to Web properties, and drive higher levels of visitor engagement for an enterprise software provider. Shaw’s previous work experience also includes serving as vice president of strategy and digital marketing with Macquarium, developing digital marketing and advertising solutions for several Fortune 500 clients. In addition, he co-founded a company called Aperio, developing digital business solutions and marketing strategies for a variety of clients.

Global public relations firm Porter Novelli today announced that Israel Mirsky has joined the company as executive vice president, emerging media and technology.  In his role he will be responsible for identifying, leveraging, and developing new communications tools and channels in the digital space.
