AOL Small Business Relaunches

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

AOL Small Business, an online resource targeted to entrepreneurs, has re-launched.

In an online post about the re-launch, Rod Kurtz, executive editor notes, “Historically, the number of businesses started during and after a recession actually goes up.  Tough economic times inspire many people to finally get out there and start their own businesses.  And existing entrepreneurs find themselves looking for every resource to help them not only survive, but to thrive.  When everyone else in the business world is hunkering down and scared to make a move, they see opportunity.”

The new AOL Small Business will offer readers success stories, how-to guides and tools, and a community of follow entrepreneurs.

One of the cornerstones of the new AOL Small Business is its Board of Directors — a group of entrepreneurs and members of the entrepreneurial community who will regularly sound off on a variety of issues, offer advice, and create a smart dialogue.

In addition to the Board of Directors, the new AOL Small Business will offer several ongoing series focusing on success stories — Entrepreneur Spotlight, My First Million, Made in the USA, and Why Didn’t I Think of That?

AOL Small Business’ library of how-to guides is called 5 Things You Need to Know.  These guides will break down the five most important things entrepreneurs need to know about a variety of business topics — from hiring first employees to filing for a patent.

Video will also be a central component of the new AOL Small Business.  Two series are being initially introduced — Ask Rod, an advice show where Kurtz fields questions from entrepreneurs, and Expert Take, where entrepreneurs from across the nation offer their advice and opinions on a variety of issues impacting their fellow entrepreneurs.

New York Times to Charge for Frequent Web Site Access

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

The idea of publications charging for Web site access is an idea being discussed with increasing frequency.  Debate has been spurred as to whether charging for this type of media would be a plausible, profitable model, or would instead defer readers to other news sources.  The New York Times announced this morning that they plan to charge visitors for frequent access to their Web site, becoming one of the first to foray into this pay-for-Web option.

Starting in early 2011, visitors to NYTimes.com will get a certain number of articles free each month before being asked to pay a flat fee for unlimited access.  Subscribers to the newspaper’s print edition will receive full access to the site.

Reporters on Twitter - What’s in it for Them?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that there is a fine line between social media/Web 2.0 for personal and professional use.  However, in the days of convergence and transparency, this line continues to blur.  In hopes of protecting their corporate image, many companies have implemented social media policies - among these companies is The Washington Post.

In his recent article, “Why Reporters Should Twitter (A Little Shop Talk),” Rob Pegoraro voices his opinion on the subject, including the problems and implications with news media implementing policies that seemingly lack transparency, and more importantly, what he strives to achieve by Tweeting.

Increasing efficiency and talking with readers before writing a story are just a couple of the benefits mentioned

Publication Update - Coverage Ceases Publication

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

coverage-logo1Coverage (American’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Coverage) has ceased publication.  They state “In 2009, readers are used to getting information electronically and instantaneously. The pace of change and the fluid environment in health care make it hard for stories planned many months in advance to be fresh and relevant when they appear in print.  So, while Coverage has been a high quality publication that we have been proud to bring to you, it doesn’t serve the need - or the niche - that it served when it was founded 20 years ago.”
